Bed Sizes South Africa
Get the bed size right and everything works: comfort, layout, and delivery. Too small and you crowd. Too big and you fight clearance, walkways, and tight corners on the way in. Here is every South African size in cm, the room each one needs, and the space each sleeper gets.
Bed Sizes at a Glance
Step 1 — Pick Your Length
Length first. South Africa uses two: Standard = 188 cm and Extra Length = 200 cm. Go Extra Length if you’re tall, share with a baby or toddler, or sleep with a dog on the bed. The extra 12 cm kills the crowding at the foot. Aim for a mattress 10–15 cm longer than your tallest sleeper:
| Tallest sleeper height | Length recommendation |
|---|---|
| Under 175 cm | Standard Length |
| 175–185 cm | Standard or Extra Length |
| 185–195 cm | Extra Length |
| Over 195 cm | Extra Length (essential) |
Step 2 — Why Bed Widths Look Odd
Most SA mattress widths are old imperial sizes converted to cm. That’s why they look uneven: 6 ft = 183 cm, 5 ft = 152 cm, 4.5 ft = 137 cm, 3.5 ft = 107 cm, 3 ft = 91 cm, 2.5 ft = 76 cm. Super King breaks the ladder at 200 x 200 cm — wider and square.
Bed Size Master Guide
| Bed size | Mattress size | Room size | Space per person | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Super King | 200 x 200 cm | 4 m x 4 m+ | 100 cm each | Large bedrooms, family sleeping, parents with a baby, or two adults with a dog |
| King | 183 x 188 / 200 cm | 3.8 m x 4 m | 91.5 cm each | Couples wanting generous space; each sleeper gets about a Single’s width |
| Queen | 152 x 188 / 200 cm | 3.5 m x 4 m | 76 cm each | Most couples and guest suites; splits into two 76 cm sections |
| Double | 137 x 188 / 200 cm | 3 m x 3.5 m | 68.5 cm each | Compact couples and smaller bedrooms; tight if a child or pet shares |
| Three Quarter | 107 x 188 / 200 cm | 3 m x 3 m | 107 cm (solo) | Teenagers and solo adults wanting more than a Single |
| Single | 91 x 188 cm | 2.5 m x 2.5 m | 91 cm (solo) | Children and spare rooms; a true single, not the 76 cm width |
| 76 cm | 76 x 188 / 200 cm | Varies (modular) | 76 cm (solo) | A dimension, not a named size: narrow/modular, queen splits, hospitality |
A Double gives each sleeper less space than a Single mattress, while a King gives each sleeper about the width of a Single bed. That’s why couples feel a big comfort jump when they move up in width.
Split King Systems

A split king base gets up stairs, through passages and around tight corners — without losing sleeping width.
Hospitality Conversion

Two 76 cm mattresses work as twins, or zip together with a bridge. Switch between separate and shared sleeping in minutes.
